Dow Jones Newswires Asia-Pacific Internship Program
What is Dow Jones Newswires?
Dow Jones Newswires is a leading supplier of real-time global economic, corporate and resources news to financial professionals across five assets classes: equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, commodities and energy. It has a network of 21 news bureaus in the Asia-Pacific region.
What is the Dow Jones Newswires Asia-Pacific Internship Program?
This program is designed for students to learn just what it means to be at the front-line in a fast-paced financial newswire environment.
Those selected will spend the summer in one of Dow Jones Newswires bureaus located across the Asia-Pacific region.
Our interns act as general assistants in our busy news bureaus. They help reporters and the bureau chief in a variety of duties.
Specifically, interns will:
- Assist reporters by helping them with their research;
- Monitor local media for possible stories of interest, and do pick-ups where appropriate;
- Work with experienced reporters in covering press conferences and briefings, and in writing up press releases or official reports;
- Learn and use a wide range of news agency writing techniques, including headlines, leads and nut graphs;
- Assist in taking dictation of stories.
Eligibility and Requirements
We are seeking applications from college or graduate students and will give preference to those who have an interest in or knowledge of business journalism and the ability to speak an Asian language.
Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.
We offer successful applicants a 40-hour work week and in some cases a small allowance to cover commuting costs and other incidental expenses. Interns are responsible for their housing and other primary living expenses and must possess a valid visa to work in the selected locations (if applicable).
When does the program start?
Our internship programs last between two to six months and generally starts in June, though start and finish dates are flexible.
What is the selection process?
The screening process puts heavy emphasis on clips and journalistic experience. Prior internships with other newspapers, wires or financial institutions would be an advantage but not required. We will also look out for applicants with awareness of financial markets.
Only short-listed candidates for final consideration will be notified and interviewed by bureau chiefs.
We try to complete the selection process by the end of April of each year.
Application Deadline
All applications should be received by February 28 2010.
